K-12 Education
Fairfield is served by two school districts: Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District and Travis Unified School District. Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District has an enrollment of over 23,000 kindergarten through grade 12 students and is comprised of 28 schools including three high schools, five middle schools, 17 elementary schools, one adult school and two continuation schools. Travis Unified School District has an enrollment of 4,860 and is comprised of 9 schools, including one high school, one middle school, five elementary schools, one adult school and one continuation school.
Fairfield's schools offer innovative programs to advance academic achievement, like the national AVID Program and the International Baccalaureate Program. Many Fairfield schools have been recognized with state or national awards for their programs, learning environment and parental and community involvement.
The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) at Armijo High School was created in 1986 and is a demanding pre-university course of study for highly motivated juniors and seniors. The IB Program is internationally recognized for its comprehensive curriculum and high standards for assessment. The program emphasizes critical thinking, intercultural understanding, and exposure to a variety of points of view.
The AVID Program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) at Fairfield and Armijo High Schools provides an in-school academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success. AVID is for all students, but it targets those in the academic middle. Three-fourths of all AVID graduates attend college, almost twice the rate at which U.S. high school graduates do.
