When the project area was adopted, the area was characterized as older, mixed-use development (office, retail, single-family housing and multi-family housing), which was largely built-out and contained several blighting influences.
The City worked with Solano County to locate the County Government Center in downtown Fairfield. This new County Government Center, completed in 2005, includes an award-winning, six-story, 300,000-square feet administrative center, a two-story, 45,000-square-foot Probation Department building, a five-level parking structure with approximately 1,000 parking spaces and a public plaza at the corner of Texas and Jefferson Streets. This complex is a major contributor to the revitalization of downtown.
The Fairfield Redevelopment Agency also provides staffing and financial resources to implement the Downtown Economic Development Strategy.
Programs and projects include:
-
Business recruitment and retention
-
Establishment of a downtown entertainment district
-
Organizational and financial support for the Fairfield Downtown Association
-
Funding for the commercial rehabilitation and façade improvement programs
-
Site control and redevelopment of blighted properties
-
Affordable housing
